Took me 6 years to realize my brush was backwards

I was at a job in Lincoln last week and the homeowner's kid asked why I was sweeping with the bristles pointing up. I told him that's how you do it. He said his dad always did it the other way. I laughed it off but later I tried it his way and holy cow, so much less dust floating everywhere. Has anyone else had a basic technique that took way too long to figure out?

Has anyone else ever had that moment where you feel like you've been doing life wrong for years? I'm with @the_miles on this one, there's definitely a time and place for both angles. For me, the real game changer was realizing that sweeping with bristles down on smooth floors is way better for fine dust, but if you've got gravel or anything heavy, flipping it up gives you way more control so it doesn't scatter everywhere. I've also found that if you sweep slower with the bristles down, it cuts down on that cloud of dust that makes you cough. Experimenting with different grip pressure helps too, a lighter touch keeps the bristles from bending all weird. What kind of floors are you dealing with mostly?

Gotta say I tried this a couple years back and it totally changed how I sweep too... but I think you might be overthinking it a little. The bristles pointing down actually works better for fine dust and stuff on smooth floors, but pointing up is still fine for rough surfaces or heavy debris where you want more control. I've seen guys at hardware stores do it both ways and they both get the job done, just depends on what you're sweeping.

Actually bought a new broom from Home Depot last week (the one with the colored bristles, you know the one) and tested both angles on my kitchen tile. The bristles-down approach picked up way more of that invisible fine dust that drives me crazy, especially around the baseboards. But for the garage where I've got sawdust and bigger crap, flipping it the other way gives me way better control without flinging stuff everywhere. I've been doing this long enough to know there's no universal right way, just whatever matches the surface you're fighting that day.
