A friend told me my 'green' electric car was just moving the pollution to a coal plant.

I've been driving a Nissan Leaf for about two years, feeling pretty good about my choice. Then last month, a buddy who works in grid management for our state pointed out that over 60% of our local power still comes from coal and natural gas. He said, 'Your tailpipe is clean, but your plug is dirty.' That hit hard. I looked up the data and he was right. So I changed my plan. Instead of just charging at home on the standard grid mix, I signed up for my utility's 100% wind power program. It costs an extra $15 a month, but now I know the juice going into my car is actually clean. It made me realize personal action needs to pair with pushing for a cleaner grid. Has anyone else had to rethink their 'green' choice after learning where their power really comes from?

Pushing for a cleaner grid" reminds me of my town's fight over a new solar farm.

What kind of pushback did your town have on the solar farm?

Man, that sounds so familiar. Our town had a huge fight over one last year. People were worried about losing farmland and how it would look. The meetings got pretty heated, honestly. It's tough when everyone wants clean energy but not in their backyard.
