Bought a $20 compost thermometer and found my pile was cooking at 140F instead of the 130F I thought
Turns out my bacteria were way more active than I gave them credit for and now I'm wondering how many other habits I've been half-assing without realizing it, anyone else get humbled by a cheap measuring tool?

Nah, a thermometer just tells you what's happening, not whether you're half-assing anything.

Honestly, a thermometer just measures temperature, but it's really about how you use that info. If you're not paying attention to what it's telling you, that's on you, not the tool.

The other day a guy came into the store complaining his oven temp was off by 15 degrees. I told him the thermometer is just a middleman, it's your job to adjust the recipe or the oven based on what it shows. You gotta work with the info you get from it, not just stare at the number. @keith274 is right, if you ignore what it's saying then you're wasting your time even owning one. Have you ever actually tried adjusting something based on what a thermometer tells you, or do you just check it and move on?
