Buddy swore my solar panels were a scam, 18 months later the math is in

My coworker Dan kept telling me that residential solar in Phoenix was a waste because our utility rates were 'too low to ever pay back.' I checked his numbers and they used the rate from 2019, not the 9% yearly hike we've had since. I installed a 6 kW system last February, and my average bill dropped from $210 to $23 per month. That's about $170 saved monthly, so my $15,400 install should break even in under 8 years, not the 15 he predicted. Has anyone else had a friend give outdated advice that ended up costing them more in the long run if they'd listened?
