I used to think electric cars were just for rich people in California
Honestly, I changed my mind after my neighbor in Cincinnati got a used Nissan Leaf for under $8k last fall. He showed me his electric bill and it was only $30 more a month, which is way less than I spend on gas. The real kicker was him letting me drive it, and it was just a normal, quiet car that got him to work. Now I'm saving up for one instead of another gas car. Has anyone else made the switch with an older, cheaper electric model?

Notice how a lot of tech just fades into the background when it actually works. My mom stopped talking about her "smart" thermostat after the first month because it just does its job. Same with my cousin's old Chevy Volt, he doesn't call it his electric car anymore, it's just his car. The good stuff becomes boring fast, and that's when you know it's actually part of your life.

That "normal, quiet car" part is exactly what got my buddy too. He found an old Ford Focus Electric for a song, and his whole thing was just not wanting to deal with the noise and vibration of his old truck anymore. It's just basic transportation that happens to plug in.

That "just basic transportation that happens to plug in" part is key, but I have to gently correct you on the Focus Electric. Those early compliance cars had terrible range, like 70 miles in good weather, so they were a lot more limited than people realized. @cora_mitchell reminded me though, it's true that when something works well enough for your daily life, you stop thinking about the tech and just drive.
