I used to think recycling was the main thing I could do, now I'm not so sure it matters
For years I rinsed every jar and flattened every box because it felt like my one real contribution, but after reading that only about 9% of plastic ever gets recycled I started wondering if I was just making myself feel better. Now I'm putting way more energy into cutting what I buy in the first place, like using refill stations at the co-op here in Minneapolis instead of grabbing new bottles every trip. Is sorting and rinsing still worth it, or are we all just doing busy work while the real problem is how much stuff gets made?
Does it ever feel like the whole system is set up so we can't win no matter how good we are about rinsing? I get the same way, like am I really helping or just doing what they told me so I stop asking who's making all this plastic in the first place.
