My smart thermostat fought me for 2 weeks before I found the real issue
I installed a new Ecobee in my place near Portland and the heating kept kicking on at night no matter what I set. After 14 days of fiddling with schedules and sensors, I called support and they asked if I had a space heater plugged into the same circuit. Turns out the furnace room had a drafty window that was tripping the occupancy sensor, plus a neighbor's router on 2.4 GHz was interfering with the wifi connection. Has anyone else had a "smart" device outsmart them because of something dumb like a draft or an old appliance?
Drafty windows messing with occupancy sensors is such a pain, and it gets worse in older houses where the thermostat shares a wall with the furnace closet. The heat from the duct chase hits the sensor and it thinks someone's home, so it runs the fan all night. What finally worked for me was putting a $10 door sweep on the furnace room door and moving the router to channel 11, and the random wake ups stopped within a day. Cheap fixes beat replacing the thermostat every time, lol.
