Overheard a lady at the coffee shop say she replaced her lawn with native plants and her water bill dropped $40 a month

I was grabbing an iced tea yesterday morning at that place on Elm Street and this older woman was talking to the barista about how she ripped out all her grass two summers ago. She said her water bill went from like $90 to $50 in the hottest months. Ive been thinking about doing something similar with my front yard but Ive got a big patch of dirt out front that just grows weeds and I water it way too much. She mentioned something about a local rebate program through the city for native landscaping. Has anyone here actually done the switch and seen a real difference on their bill or in maintenance time? Im in zone 6b if that matters.

Yeah I actually did this two years ago. Tore out the front lawn myself. Took a weekend and a lot of sweat. My water bill dropped about $35 a month during summer. Plus I barely touch the yard now just pull a weed here and there. The city gave me a $200 rebate for the native plants too. Zone 6a here so close enough.

Zone 6a here too, tell me about it. $35 a month buys me about 8 bags of chips from the vending machine at work.

Whoa, wait, $40 a month savings just from swapping out grass? I mean that's basically a free streaming subscription or a couple takeout coffees each month just falling back in your pocket. Idk about you but that kind of real money savings would definitely make me want to grab a shovel this weekend.
