Question about my bike commute disaster yesterday

I tried biking to cut car use, but I got a flat tire and needed a lift. Now I see that keeping my bike in good shape is crucial for sticking with it.

How often do you check your bike before riding? Expanding on what @wader71 said, making a quick check part of your routine can stop small issues from turning into commute killers. I learned that looking at tires, brakes, and chain takes just a minute but saves a lot of hassle. It turns a chore into a habit that keeps you rolling without surprises.

That "quick check part of your routine" line is so true. I was bad for just jumping on and going until I got a slow leak halfway to work. Now I do that same minute-long look at tires and brakes, and it really does become automatic. It saves you from those stupid, preventable headaches.

Yeah, it's one of those things you only learn after a dumb mistake. I once rode a whole block with my disc brake rubbing because I was in a hurry and didn't look. Sounded like an angry insect and totally killed my speed. Now that quick glance is just part of grabbing my helmet.

Used to skip bike checks but learned the hard way they really matter.
