The neighbor who laughed at my solar quote until the power bill hit

Last spring in Austin, my neighbor Rick saw the $14,000 install price on my 6kW system and literally snorted. He said I'd never break even before the panels wore out, you know, that whole 'you're throwing money away' speech. Fast forward to July, his AC bill was $310 and mine was $87, and he sent me a text asking for my installer's number. I didn't rub it in, mostly because we're friends, but it did make me wonder how many people write off solar based on sticker shock alone. Has anyone else had a skeptic flip their view after seeing real numbers from your utility statement?

Man, that's such a familiar story. My buddy in Phoenix had the exact same thing happen, his neighbor laughed at his setup for years. Then one summer they both got hit with those brutal rate hikes and suddenly his neighbor was knocking on his door asking for a tour of the inverter. It's funny how people need to see the proof in their own bills before they change their mind. I swear, some folks would rather pay triple over time than admit they were wrong about something upfront. The math never changes, but people's pride sure does. Glad Rick came around, that's the best kind of validation honestly.

Reminds me of my uncle who swore up and down that vinyl was dead, even after I showed him the sales numbers every year. Then his kid found my old record player at a garage sale and now he's the one sending me photos of his collection every weekend. People flip their whole opinion once they get a little skin in the game, even if it's just the pride of owning something that works.
