The stack of takeout containers from our weekly family movie night is getting out of hand.

Last Sunday, I cleaned up after our movie night and found a pile of plastic containers from takeout. We do this every week, and it hit me how much waste we make without thinking. Each container takes energy to make and ship, adding to carbon emissions. I talked to my kids about it, and they didn't realize the impact. Now, we're trying to cook at home more or use reusable dishes. It's a small change, but if every family did it, we could cut down a lot of pollution. I'm not saying stop movie nights, just be mindful of the trash. Let's make fun times better for the planet too.

My buddy Mark in Seattle had the same issue with pizza boxes every Friday game night. He actually kept track for a month and ended up with twenty three boxes. His roommate finally said they should just bake frozen pizza on a cookie sheet they already owned. Now they reuse that same sheet and their regular plates, so the recycling barely fills up. Mark told me it was a simple fix that saved them money and a lot of cardboard. It really shows how easy it is to change one small habit for the better.

Look at the labels on those containers sometime. In my experience, a lot of them aren't actually recyclable even if they have the symbol, which just adds to the landfill problem. Your mileage may vary, but we switched to a shared family cooking night where everyone picks a dish, and it cuts down on waste and makes movie night more special. It's a small shift, but teaching kids where food comes from can change their habits for good. Plus, homemade popcorn tastes way better than takeout, in my opinion.

Those recycling symbols are basically just decoration at this point. Guess the container's final destination is the same as the takeout food.
