The way people talk about solar panels drives me up a wall

I was at a neighborhood BBQ last Saturday and this guy is bragging about his solar setup saving him $300 a month. But he didn't mention he paid $28,000 upfront and it'll take 8 years to break even. Nobody talks about the real payback period or what happens when an inverter dies after year 5. Has anyone else sat through a sales pitch that conveniently left out the maintenance costs?

So folks only brag about the benefits, nobody warns you about the downsides.
