TIL my neighbor has been composting for 12 years without a single bin

I was out weeding my tiny garden strip last Saturday when my neighbor Bob walked over with a bucket of coffee grounds. Turns out he's been doing "trench composting" since 2012. He just digs a hole, dumps his kitchen scraps in, covers it back up, and rotates spots around his yard. No bins, no turning, no smell. He said he saves about $60 a year on fertilizer and his tomatoes are insane. I've been over here buying expensive compost bins and fighting with rats, and this dude has been laughing for over a decade. Has anyone else tried this method? I'm honestly thinking of ditching my bin setup.

Buries its own evidence so nobody sees the rotting waste.

The methane capture system at the Altamont Landfill near Livermore actually prevents a lot of that waste from just rotting in the open air, @miller.thomas. It's not always pretty, but it's better than the old ways of just piling it all up.

Ngl I read trench composting keeps scavengers away better than open piles.
