TIL my solar panel quote changed when I asked about net metering in Tucson
Got a quote for a 6kW system, then asked the company about our local net metering rate change. They quietly redid the numbers and the payback period jumped from 9 to 14 years. Has anyone else caught installers glossing over utility policy shifts like that?

That payback jump is brutal but honestly not shocking. The real kicker nobody talks about is how the utility can change the rules again after you sign, so those companies are just covering their own butts today, not protecting you tomorrow. Caught a buddy in Phoenix who got quoted on a 1:1 credit rate that got axed mid-install, and the installer refused to redo his system size even though his roof had room for two more panels. He ended up with a bigger bill for the first year until he haggled with them to add capacity at cost. Best move is to ask for the quote with the worst case net metering number and the best case, then assume the middle. Does your contract have any language about what happens if rates change again next year?
