Update: I thought turning my thermostat down at night did nothing, then I saw my January bill
For 2 winters I kept our heat at 68 all night because my dad swore that changing it made no difference and cost more in the long run. Then a neighbor in Rochester told me she dropped hers to 62 overnight and saved close to $40 in one month, so I tried it out of spite. Our next bill came in $37 lower and the house honestly felt the same under the comforter. What got me was a $12 programmable thermostat from the hardware store doing most of the work for us. Did anyone else's parents pass down a home energy tip that turned out to be totally backwards?
