A veteran operator in Ohio showed me a trick that flipped my thinking

Back in March I was running a Haas VF-2 at a shop near Dayton and this guy in his 60s, maybe 40 years on the machines, watched me fighting a chatter issue on a 6061 plate. He walked over, grabbed a piece of scrap, and just said lower your spindle speed and double the feed, it's not cutting harder, it's cutting smarter. I'd been stuck on bumping rpm like everyone taught me, but that one change cut my cycle time by 18% and the finish looked better than anything I'd done. Have any of you old-timers out there got a move like that that made you feel dumb for not seeing it sooner?

Cutting smarter, not harder" is the story of my whole life, except swap "cutting" with "tightening rent renewal deadlines I forgot about." I still bump rpm out of pure muscle memory though, so this guy would probably watch me and hand me a crayon.

Muscle memory just means your hands are smarter than your brain, so maybe hand that crayon back.
