Figured out why my tool offsets kept drifting after 3 months

Been running a Haas VF-2 for about a year and finally realized I was zeroing my tools off the part instead of the table. Took a senior operator watching me for 30 seconds to point it out - has anyone else had that aha moment with a basic step?

Put your indicator on the table and zero it there every single time. That part will move if you bump it or if the vise shifts even a little bit. I've seen guys chase offsets for weeks because they were using the part surface and didn't realize the stock had a slight taper or burr on one side. Once you make it a habit to always touch off on the table, that drift just stops being an issue. It's one of those small tweaks that saves you a ton of headache down the road lol.

Well honestly you should be zeroing off the table anyway.

Switched to touching off on a gauge block on the table instead of the part and never looked back. Saves me from chasing ghost offsets when the stock has a burr or the vise shifts a little.
