Finally stopped touching off every tool by hand, wish I'd done it 3 years sooner
For the first 5 years running my Haas VF2 I set every tool by jogging down and sneaking a feeler gauge or a slip of paper under the tip. Felt like real machinist work I guess. Then I crashed a 1/2 inch end mill into a vise jaw on a Friday afternoon and broke the insert pocket, cost me about $85 and a whole weekend of no pay. A guy named Daryl who runs the night shift saw me cussing at the machine Monday and just said "why are you not using the probe, it's sitting right there." So I spent a Saturday learning the Renishaw routines and writing offsets into the program instead of punching numbers in at the control. First part after that came out .0008 off on three tools that used to drift .003 or more depending on how tired my hand was that day. Took me maybe two hours to set up the templates and now tool changes are just a button push. Should have done this years ago instead of treating the probe like some fancy option I didn't rate. Anybody else fight the probe for way too long before finally giving in?

Nah, feeling it out by hand teaches you things a probe can't.
