Had to pick between a used Haas and a new Tormach for my garage shop last month
I was looking at a 2012 Haas Mini Mill for 18k but it had a lot of hours and no warranty, then the Tormach 1100M was 15k brand new. I went with the Tormach cause I figured less risk and easier to learn on at home. Anyone else had to choose between used industrial and new hobby grade for a side gig?

You went with the Tormach cause you figured less risk" - man, I gotta push back on that. A used Haas, even with high hours, is a real machine built to run all day every day. That Tormach might be easier to learn on, but when you go to sell it in a few years (and you will, we all do), you'll take a bath on it. The Haas will hold its value way better, and parts are everywhere. I'd rather have a beat up workhorse than a shiny toy that's already depreciated the minute you plug it in.

You ever actually run a Haas with high hours though? I've seen some that were rode hard and put away wet, and the repair bills add up fast. A Tormach might not hold value, but a busted Haas is worth scrap.
