Hot take: I think the whole "slower feeds always give better finish" thing is overblown

Saw a guy on another forum say he runs at 15 IPM for everything and swears it's the only way. I bumped mine to 40 IPM on a 304 stainless job last Tuesday and got a way nicer surface than when I baby it. Anyone else found a sweet spot way higher than the old guys recommend?

Nah, that's just what the old timers tell new guys so they feel important.

And I think a lot depends on your machine and setup too. My old Bridgeport liked it slow but my newer mill runs way better at 35 IPM. It really just comes down to finding what works for your specific gear.

Buddy of mine dialed in a 40 year old lathe and never looked back.
