Hot take: That super cheap collet set from Amazon actually held up fine

I was super skeptical when my buddy in Detroit swore by this $30 set of ER32 collets he found online, figured they'd wobble like crazy or wear out in a week. But after running 150 parts on my Haas last month, the runout was within half a thou the whole time (good enough for what I do). Anybody else taken a chance on budget tooling and had it not bite you in the butt?

...and honestly half a thou is totally acceptable for 90% of what most of us are doing day to day. But I gotta push back on calling them ER32 collets for a minute. The shank on your toolholder is the actual ER collet chuck, those collets themselves are just the ER collets. The ER32 part is the size of the collet, not the whole setup. Just a pet peeve of mine since I had to learn the hard way when I ordered the wrong size. Did you check the taper on your actual nut or just assume it was standard?

Hang on, is nobody gonna mention that those cheaper collets sometimes have a slightly different slit pattern that can mess with your grip on the tool? I've noticed the cheap ones don't close up as evenly as the good ones, no matter how tight you go.

Maybe it's just me but I've had mixed luck with cheap ER collets too, @grantw41.
