Laser probe calibration trick I wish I knew 5 years ago

So I was setting up a new job last week on my old Haas and the probe was drifting like crazy, readings were all over the place. I figured it was just thermal stuff since the shop was freezing that morning, but then I remembered something a guy mentioned on a forum about checking the stylus tip for micro chips with a loupe. Sure enough, there was a tiny burr on the ruby from a past crash that I never caught with the naked eye. Cleaned it up with a ceramic stone and suddenly my repeatability went from like 0.002 to 0.0003 on the same part. I mean, I always assumed calibration errors were software or mechanical, not something so simple and physical on the tip itself. Has anyone else dealt with a sneaky probe issue that turned out to be a tiny piece of debris or damage? Curious what other quick fixes I might be missing.
