Old-school guy at my last shop swore by WD-40 for tapping threads...

He said it's all he's used for 30 years, but I keep reading that proper tapping fluid makes way cleaner cuts. Has anyone else tested this side by side on stainless?

Oh man, that's a classic debate right there. I've tried WD-40 on some softer metals and it's okay in a pinch, but on stainless steel it always felt like I was fighting it the whole time. I picked up a bottle of Tap Magic a few years ago and honestly the difference was night and day - way less chatter and the taps didn't feel like they were about to snap. I mean, maybe the old guy just had a really practiced hand from all those years, but for me the proper stuff is worth the extra trip to the store.

Totally feel you on that, it's frustrating when you think you're saving a buck but end up making the job harder. I've been there too with cheap alternatives on tricky jobs and it's just not worth the headache. Honestly, sometimes you just have to trust the guys who have been doing it for decades.

Trust the guys who have been doing it for decades" is all well and good, but that assumes they're still around to ask. What happens when the old-timer retires and nobody wrote down his setup secrets or the exact oil he used? Maybe the real lesson is we should be learning why he chose that stuff, not just copying what he had on the shelf.
