Ran my old Mazak for 5,000 straight hours without a single crash, which felt impossible a year ago.

Wait, did you mean 5,000 hours of actual spindle runtime? That's over 200 days of constant cutting. Maybe you meant the machine was powered on and in service for that long? Either way, keeping any old Mazak running that long is a huge win. You must have a great maintenance routine.

So @margaret736, what's the real secret then, just clean oil and filters? I've seen guys run these old Mazaks into the ground by skipping the small stuff, like never checking the way lube or ignoring funny sounds from the spindle drive. What's the one thing you always do that others forget?

Had a buddy who ran an old Mazak for years and his trick was the opposite of most guys. He never did anything fancy. Just used the cheapest oil he could find and changed the filters whenever he remembered. Machine ran like a tank for over a decade. Then one day someone borrowed it and did a full maintenance schedule. Thing grenaded a week later. Sometimes I think not touching it is the real secret. Makes you wonder if we overthink all this stuff, right?
