Notice this happening with basic math too. I stopped using my phone's calculator for small stuff, like splitting a bill or figuring out a tip. Doing it in my head feels slow at first, but now I can ballpark numbers way faster. That little bit of friction builds a real sense for the numbers that just tapping buttons never did.

Hard to argue with that point. Doing things by hand really sticks in your brain. Shortcuts might save time now, but they don't teach you much. It's like learning to cook without always using a recipe. You end up knowing why things work, not just how to make them work. So yeah, solid take.
