The fixture plate trick that saved my part setup time in Tacoma

I was fighting with this repeat job for weeks, re-indicating every time because my soft jaws kept shifting. Tried a cheap grid plate from a local supplier, but the hole pattern was off by like 0.002" across the whole 12" length. Finally just drilled my own pattern into some 6061 plate with a 5/8" end mill and tapped a few 1/4-20 holes. Now I can swap parts in under 5 minutes instead of 20. Has anyone else just said screw it and made their own fixture plate instead of buying one?

Two thou across a foot is pretty tight for a cheap grid plate, most jobs don't need that kind of accuracy anyway. Glad it worked out, but sounds like a lot of extra drilling for something you could have just shimmed.
