Wrote off quick change tooling for years until a 2am crash in Wichita changed my mind
Three years ago I ran a Haas VF2 in Wichita and swore quick change holders were for guys who couldn't set tools right. Last month a night guy crashed a holder into a vise jaw and we lost four hours resetting offsets. Bought a set the next week and setup dropped from 25 minutes to 8. Anybody else switch late on tooling they bad mouthed for years?
The part nobody talks about is how much easier it is to train new guys on quick change. When I had to teach someone to set a standard holder, half of them would get the pull stud torque wrong or not seat the taper right, and then you are chasing chatter for a week. With quick change the whole thing is basically foolproof, they just pop it in and go. So even if your setup time only drops a little, your scrap rate and your babysitting time drop a ton. That is the real savings nobody puts on the spreadsheet.
