A kid at the local shop made me rethink my whole 'no spoilers' rule

I was picking up my pull list last Friday and this boy, maybe 10, was staring at the new X-Men cover with his mouth open. He looked up at me and said, 'Mister, do you think they'll ever fix the timeline?' I told him I didn't know, and he just said, 'That's okay, the not knowing is the best part.' It hit me that I've been so focused on avoiding spoilers I forgot the fun of just wondering. How do you balance staying surprised with the hype of new releases?

My rule is I only watch the first trailer for a movie. The second one always shows the third act. For comics, I'll read the main cover blurb and maybe the first page of preview art. Lets me get excited without seeing the big twist.

The kid's right about the not knowing being fun, but it goes for everything now from movies to video games where people want to know every detail before they even start. We spend so much time trying to control our experience that we forget how good it feels to just be surprised by something.

Honestly, that kid nailed it. I've started letting myself read the preview pages they put out for free, but I stop at the last one. Gives me a taste of the art and vibe without wrecking the actual story beats.

The full Marvel spoilers thread on 4chan actually saved me fifty bucks last month. I read the whole plot leak for that big summer event and realized I hated the direction, so I skipped buying all six issues. Sometimes knowing the ending helps you avoid wasting time and money on stories that won't satisfy you.
