Had to pick between a rare variant cover or paying rent on time this month
My local shop got a single copy of the 'Spider-Man 2099' #1 glow-in-the-dark variant, priced at $75. My rent was due in two days, and I was short exactly that amount. I picked the comic (I know, I know) and had to ask my dad for a loan to cover the rent. It felt pretty dumb, but holding that book was a real high. Has anyone else ever made a really bad money choice for a comic they just had to have?

That "real high" you mentioned is the dangerous part. It's not just about the book, it's about winning the hunt and owning a piece of something special. The problem is that feeling fades, but rent being late has real consequences. I've been there, and the stress from the fallout always lasts way longer than the buzz from the find.

Williamw75 is dead right about that high fading fast. I once spent my grocery money on a first edition that felt like winning the lottery for about two days. Then I was just eating ramen and staring at a fancy book for a month.

Yeah, that "winning the hunt" feeling is exactly the trap. I started setting a hard cash limit for myself before I even look at an auction listing. If a book costs more than that, I close the tab. It sounds simple, but you have to decide the price of your own peace of mind before you get hooked on the chase. The book will always be there later if you really want it, but being broke and stressed is a terrible trade for a temporary thrill.
