Heard a kid at the comic shop say he only reads the big event books
It was at The Dragon's Hoard in Portland, and he was telling his friend he skips everything else to 'save money'. Made me think we might be losing the whole point of following characters. Anyone else feel like the constant event hype is pushing new readers away from the actual month-to-month stories?

Nah, I get where his head is at though. Events are like the highlight reel. It's easier to drop $20 on a crossover that's been hyped for months than gamble on a random issue that might lead nowhere. I started reading comics during Civil War, not because I cared about any single character but because everyone was talking about it.

Totally get that, I saw a guy on a subreddit say he only reads the big movie tie-in books. It just seems like a weird way to get into comics, you miss all the character growth. The constant events make everything feel like homework instead of fun.

That guy only reading movie tie-ins, does he even know what he's missing? I mean, how do you get invested in a character if you skip all their actual stories?
