My cousin keeps calling every superhero movie a 'comic book movie' even when it's not based on anything, and it drives me nuts.

Just hit him with the facts next time. Like if he calls The Incredibles a comic book movie, point out it was an original Pixar script. Or mention how Unbreakable wasn't based on comics either. Sometimes people just say it out of habit without thinking.

Ugh, I just started calling them "superhero flicks" and he picked it up.

Yeah, that "out of habit without thinking" thing is everywhere. People do it with music genres or food labels too, just lumping stuff together because it's easier.

Honestly, I actually get why your cousin does it. Superhero movies and comic book movies kind of feel like the same thing at this point because the genre has such a specific vibe, even if the source material is different. It might be technically wrong, but calling The Incredibles a comic book movie still makes sense when you think about the tone and the visual style. People say stuff like that all the time with other things too, like calling any action movie a "franchise film" even if it's brand new. It might annoy you, but it's just a shortcut for talking about a whole category of movies, not a big deal in the grand scheme.
