Overheard a guy at my LCS say variant covers are a trap - he was right

I was at my local shop in Austin last Saturday flipping through the new arrivals when this older collector told his friend that variant covers are just a way to get you to buy the same book twice. He said he wasted over $300 on variants before he realized the story inside never changes. It made me think about my own stack of 5 different covers for issue #1 that I barely read. Has anyone else felt burned by chasing variants over the actual content?

Thing is, those variants sometimes get printed in smaller numbers than the regular cover so they actually become the cheaper option down the road if the book blows up. I grabbed a low print run variant for like $8 a few years ago that ended up being worth $150.

That "worth $150" part is why I still grab variants though, that gamble is part of the fun for me.

Man, I just switched to only buying variants if the cover art is something I actually want on my wall. Saved a ton of cash and I actually read the books now instead of stacking them.
