That Saturday I found a Silver Surfer #4 in a $1 bin in Cincinnati
Went to a small show at the Sharonville convention center and dug through a box marked "reader copies, a buck each." Halfway down was a Silver Surfer #4 with a beat-up cover, but the pages were all there and not one coupon got clipped. I paid my dollar and the guy next to me just shrugged. Got home and my buddy Dave, who has been collecting since 1988, pulled up the sold listings on his phone and I nearly dropped my coffee. Anyone else ever have a dollar bin day like that, or was this just dumb luck?
Did you check the back cover for water damage before you got too excited? Silver Surfer #4 is one of those books where condition really matters, so take it to a shop and get an honest grade before you start dreaming about the sold listings. My rule with bin finds is to press it flat between heavy boards for a week or two and just leave the cleaning alone, because a lot of guys ruin a good book trying to fix a stain. Also make sure Dave was looking at ACTUAL sold prices and not asking prices, since those are two very different numbers. Either way a buck for a key issue with clean pages is a great day, congrats.
