That time a collector told me my Iron Man run was 'boring grading material'

I brought my full 2008 Invincible Iron Man run to a local shop in Portland to get slabbed, and the owner said I'd waste $30 per issue on common books that wouldn't hold value. He suggested I focus on key first appearances or variant covers instead, which made me realize I was just hoarding filler issues. Has anyone else had a dealer give you harsh feedback that actually made you rethink your collection strategy?

Thirty bucks for a little life lesson on how to be a snobby gatekeeper, what a bargain.

Why collect if it's just filler though?

I had a friend who spent years collecting those little ceramic frogs from garage sales, every single one was "just a frog" to anyone else. But she could tell you which ones were from the 60s, which had a hairline crack in the glaze, and which one she'd been hunting for since 2008. Sometimes the filler pieces are the ones that make the collection feel complete, it's about the story not the price tag.
