The day I saw a guy flip through a longbox like he was sorting poker chips

I was at my local shop in Akron last Saturday and this older guy came in, grabbed a longbox of dollar bin books, and rifled through them so fast I couldn't even track his hands. He pulled out six books in maybe 90 seconds, including a first print of a 90s X-Men annual that had a minor printing error worth like $30. It made me realize I've been wasting so much time thumbing page by page. Anybody else ever watch a veteran collector do something that made you totally rethink your own system?

Guy probably just got lucky. I flip through boxes fast too and mostly pull out junk.

Mileslane, I totally get that - I used to think the same way until I slowed down and actually looked at the corners and edges real close. I finally pulled a 1st edition base set Charizard just last week doing that.

Mileslane, that's exactly what I used to do too. I would just flip through packs so fast I missed all the good stuff hidden in plain sight. Then one day I actually took my time, held each card up to the light, and found a shadowless First Edition Machamp that was in perfect condition underneath a scratched up common. That lucky feeling went away real quick when I realized how many times I probably walked right past good finds. Now I always slow way down and check every single card, even the ones that look beat up at first glance. What kind of stuff do you normally pull when you're flipping through fast?
