Update: That collector who corrected my grading at a show in Portland
He quietly pointed out a color-breaking crease on a Silver Surfer #4 that I'd graded at 9.0 myself, then spent 10 minutes showing me how to spot misprints on the spine, and I left the table with a whole new respect for how much I still don't know.

What gets me is that this kind of knowledge is getting harder to find with comic shops closing and experienced graders aging out. Your mileage may vary, but I've noticed the older collectors who caught errors by feel and years of handling books are a dying breed. It's almost like we're losing a whole unofficial training system that even the grading companies can't fully replace.

Notices the same thing at thrift stores and flea markets too, those old timers who could spot a fake or a damaged item from across the room are disappearing and nobody's learning that hands on stuff anymore.

That Silver Surfer #4 story really hits home. I had an old timer at a convention in Chicago teach me how to check for staple rust by feel, and it totally changed how I look at books now.
Breaks my heart that this kind of hands-on knowledge is fading. Do you think there are still enough people out there willing to pass it on, or are we just watching it disappear?
