Debate: Do you fix a leak on the surface or just deal with it underwater? My 8 hour mistake.
Spent 8 hours fighting a leaky flange on a platform off the coast of Galveston last month. I kept trying to fix it underwater with clamps and sealant, but it just kept weeping. My buddy said I should have surfaced and welded a new fitting on the deck, then gone back down. Would that have been faster or just added a whole separate set of problems? Has anyone else been stuck on a simple fix for way too long before?

Surface repair every time. Clamps underwater are just a bandaid.

Man, I totally disagree with that. Clamps can hold up just fine for years if you get a good stainless steel one and install it right. Surface repairs are great but they're way more invasive and expensive. Sometimes you just need a quick fix that actually works, not a whole big project. Not everything has to be a full blown restoration.
