Did you know an average dive helmet weighs 32 pounds out of water?

I was at a trade show last month in Houston and they had an old Kirby Morgan 37 on display. I picked it up to check the hoses and nearly dropped it because I thought it would be way lighter. The guy running the booth laughed and told me the 37 is actually one of the lighter helmets they made too. Has anyone else been surprised by gear specs that don't match what you expected from pictures?

Thirty two pounds is nothing once you're underwater, that's the whole point. That trade show guy probably didn't mention the neck padding distributes the weight better than you'd expect.

Right, because nothing says "smart purchase" like strapping a bag of bowling balls to your neck and hoping the water makes it all better. The trade show guy probably also told you it cures back pain and makes you coffee, right? I'm sure the padding is great until you're walking around the airport trying to catch a connecting flight looking like a turtle with a neck injury. Thirty two pounds is still thirty two pounds, even if it's spread out like a bad dream. But hey, if you want to feel like a human anchor, that's your call.
