Had my lift bag pop at 60 feet and it changed how I rig everything now
After 12 years of diving, I was at a job off the coast of Galveston last month when my lift bag shot to the surface because I had the dump valve open too wide. I always thought I had it down, but that near miss made me realize I was using way too much lift for the load weight. Anyone else have a stupid mistake that finally made you double-check your rigging every time?

Take it from someone who spends all day lifting heavy stuff for a living, that mismatch between lift and load is the most common mistake you can make. A little extra lift feels safe until the bag hits the surface and things start flying. Over-rigging is just as bad as under-rigging, it's just a different kind of trouble.

Wait, isn't over-rigging usually safer than under-rigging though?

Ever jammed your finger in a car door while wearing the keys?

Jammed my finger in a car door wearing the keys" is exactly the kind of stupid mistake I've made before. What worked for me was slowing down and making sure my hand was clear before I even thought about closing the door. It's all about training yourself to pause for one second and check, because rushing always leads to that kind of pain.
