Had my umbilical snag on a dock inspection in Baltimore and the standby diver saved the day
I was doing a dock inspection under a pier in Baltimore last Tuesday and my umbilical snagged on some rebar that wasn't on the drawings. I tried backing out slow but it just pulled tighter, so I gave two tugs and held still like we drill. The standby diver was in the water in under a minute and freed me off the rebar at about 22 feet. Turns out the fender line I thought was clear had wrapped my hose when the current shifted. What's your go-to move when you feel that first tug and can't see what's holding you?
Wait, that fender line wrapped your hose when the current shifted? That is straight up nightmare fuel right there. Glad the standby diver was on it fast, 22 feet with a snag and shifting current is no joke.
