Hot take: I used to think band masks fitting tight was always better

For years I cranked my Kirby Morgan band mask super tight on every dive in Seattle. Thought a leak meant I wasn't cinching it down enough. Then a buddy on a bridge job showed me his mask seals fine with way less tension, and I realized I was causing headaches and face fatigue for no reason. Anyone else get told tight is always right and find out the hard way?

Man I feel that, it took me way too long to figure out the same thing.

Heard a horror story from a dive buddy who learned that one the hard way.

Hold up, I am going to push back on this. I have been diving Puget Sound for a decade and a loose mask is how you end up with a face full of cold water when you least expect it. A bit of a headache beats getting a sudden leak that fogs your view on a tricky current or during a critical phase of the job. I crank mine down every time and I have zero issues, so maybe your buddy just has a weird head shape.
