Just hit 500 hours on my Kirby Morgan hat and the number really got me

I was logging my dives from a job in Mobile last week and saw the total. It's not just the time, it's all the silt, the cold, and the weird fixes that got me there. Who else has a piece of gear that's just become part of the job?

Ever notice how the gear that fights you the most ends up being the one you trust? My old drysuit zipper needs a specific, angry little wiggle that would look insane to anyone else, but it's our thing now.

500 hours of silt, cold, and weird fixes... sounds like you and that hat have been through a bad marriage that somehow works. My old dive light has seen some things too, but mostly it just judges me from the gear bag. That's the real milestone, when your gear stops being a tool and starts being a grumpy coworker.

Honestly, it's more like a grumpy old dog than a coworker. My backup mask has this leak I've fixed with duct tape so many times the skirt is more tape than rubber at this point. It still fogs up if I look at it wrong, but I know exactly how to tilt my head to clear it. That weird trust is the real thing, not just putting up with each other.
