Question about using a full face mask for every job

I heard a guy at the dock in Seattle say he always uses a full face mask, even for simple inspections in clear water. He said it's the only safe way to dive. I think that's overkill for easy jobs where you need to talk to topside a lot. When do you think a half mask is still the right call?

That guy's rule is a bit much for me. For basic inspections in good vis, a half mask is way less of a hassle, especially if you're on comms all day. The full face mask is great when you really need that extra protection from bad water or debris. But for clear, easy work, the simpler gear just makes the job smoother.

I did a 40-foot inspection dive last week with a half mask, mark_green. The water was clear and the comms were fine. Not every job needs the full face setup.

Yeah, the half mask is way easier for simple dives.

Honestly I used to be in the camp that half masks were fine for most stuff, but @mileslane that story about your 40 foot inspection dive kind of got me thinking. I mean I always figured full face was overkill unless you're in nasty water or deep wrecks. But then I realized if you're talking to topside for hours, the full face is way more comfortable because you're not constantly swapping your reg and the comms are clearer. Full face mask also keeps your face warm and protects you if something unexpected happens like a sudden current bringing up silt. So yeah, maybe that Seattle guy has a point even for easy jobs, at least for anyone who does this a lot. I guess it depends on how much you hate setting up the extra gear.
