Rode the new hot water suit for a month, going back to my old shell

Last month I forked over $3,400 for that fancy hot water suit everyone raves about, and my core temp swung way more than my trusty 20 year old Kirby Morgan setup ever did. Anyone else find the old school gear is just more predictable on cold North Sea jobs, or am I the only one sticking with what works?

That part about "old school gear being more predictable" hits the nail on the head. I ran a similar top end unit for two seasons and the electronics were always guessing at what my core needed, felt like it was reacting to me instead of just working. My old Kirby Morgan doesn't think, it just does its job. Once you've been in a situation where the suit adds heat when you're already sweating and you can't easily adjust, you get why simple is better. Sure the new one had nice data and a fancy display, but on a rough day all that extra stuff is just another thing to fail. Going back to the old shell feels like putting on a pair of boots you've already broken in, no surprises. I'd rather know exactly what I'm getting than chase a number on a screen.
