Serious question, anyone work the old pier pilings in Galveston Bay?

We were cutting a section last Tuesday when my buddy's torch just... quit, no warning, right at 90 feet. Turns out the silt cloud we kicked up had a pocket of something that snuffed the flame and jammed the regs. What do you guys use to check for gas pockets in zero viz mud like that?

Honestly, how often does that really happen? I've been on crews cutting pilings for years and never saw a pocket big enough to kill a torch. Could it have just been bad gear or the regs freezing up?

Ever check with a gas sniffer first, wood.uma?

Bad gear happens, but that silt cloud story sounds exactly like a gas pocket. Seen it before with rotting wood and trapped methane.
