TIL my old dive knife was a real problem after a close call on a rig in the Gulf last month.

I had to pick between a blunt-tip rescue knife and a standard serrated edge, and going with the blunt tip probably saved me from a nasty cut when my line got tangled in some old cable.

On that Gulf rig last month, I saw a guy try to cut a tangled nylon line with a serrated blade. The teeth grabbed and the knife jerked back towards his arm. A blunt tip rescue knife has a rounded end and a smooth cutting edge for that exact reason. It lets you push the flat of the blade against something and slice without the point catching. For a sudden tangle under stress, that safe design is the better tool.

Man, that's a seriously close call. Glad you're okay and that blunt tip did its job. It's one of those gear choices you don't think about until you really need it. Makes you double check all your old equipment now, doesn't it?

Actually, a serrated edge is way better for cutting rope or cable... a blunt tip just keeps you from stabbing yourself.
