A client's dead Dell turned me into a heat gun believer, but my coworker says I got lucky
Had a Latitude 5420 last week that would not post, and I reflowed the CPU power section with a cheap $30 heat gun from the hardware store down on 5th. It booted fine and has been running 4 days now, but my bench partner says it will fail again in a month and I just delayed buying a new board. On the other side, some guys I know in Irving swear by reflowing everything first because it saves the customer money and it usually holds long enough. So which is it, quick fix or waste of bench time that comes back to bite you?
Man, I've been there! Reflowed a dead HP laptop board with a $25 Harbor Freight gun two years ago and that thing is still chugging along for the customer, so your bench partner might just be wrong on this one.
