Appreciation post: that $9 USB hub that saved a whole classroom setup last Tuesday
I was helping my cousin set up 12 Chromebooks for a middle school lab in Tacoma, and the school's old docking station just fried itself mid-session. I grabbed a $9 no-name 7-port hub from my truck, wired everything through it, and the whole class ran smooth for 4 hours straight. Anyone else keep a cheap spare hub specifically for those 'it'll work fine' moments that absolutely do not work fine?

Honestly, the real lesson here is that cheap gear often outlasts the fancy stuff when it comes to heat and stress. Those $9 hubs have zero airflow restrictions and no fancy chips to fry, so they just keep chugging. The expensive docks are packed so tight that one bad surge kills the whole board. Maybe the school should just buy a dozen of those cheap ones and call it a day. Plus, if one dies, you toss it and grab another, no tears lost.
