Can we talk about how shops still set every PC to shut down on the power button?
I picked up a Dell OptiPlex from a dental office in Reno that was on its third power supply in 18 months. Turns out someone there was bumping the button with a knee when reaching for a chart, and every bump killed the machine cold. I changed the power button action to sleep in the control panel and it never came back. The fix takes maybe 20 seconds and saves a rig from getting shut down dirty all day. How do you all set the power button on a front desk or shop floor machine?
The part nobody talks about is what happens to open files when that knee hits the button. Sleep keeps the session alive, but a hard shutdown on a machine with a patient chart half saved means lost work and sometimes a corrupted file. On top of that, those dirty shutdowns are also why the PSU kept dying, not just bad luck. Every cold cut spikes the surge on the rail, so the third power supply was a symptom, not the cause. Setting it to sleep fixes both the file problem and the wear on the hardware. I also set the button so a long press still does a real shutdown for when someone actually needs it.
