Had to choose between a used Dell and a refurbished HP for a budget build last week

I needed a cheap workstation for a client and had $300 to spend. I went with the Dell Optiplex because of the easier part availability here in Austin. Anyone else have better luck with one brand over the other for these office refurbs?

oh man, you made the right call. ive gone back and forth on those two brands and the Dell parts availability just makes life easier down the road, in my experience. your mileage may vary but i've had good luck with the Optiplex line holding up too.

Gotta push back on this one actually. I've had Dell parts fail way more often than HP or Lenovo. Last Optiplex I had the power supply died twice in three years, good luck finding one that's not some off brand on Amazon. At least with HP you can get genuine parts through their business site without jumping through hoops. And that whole "parts availability" thing only matters if you're still under warranty, after that you're paying Dell prices for proprietary stuff that should be standard. I'd rather have a machine that doesn't break than one that's easy to fix when it does.
